Concrete Removal & Residential Demolition in Rapid City, SD

Some jobs are too big for a jackhammer and a rented trailer and too small for a big demolition company. A cracked driveway, an old patio, a falling-down garage, a slab where a mobile home used to sit. Black River Contracting does this kind of work around Rapid City: we break it out, haul it off and leave the ground graded for whatever comes next.

Concrete and asphalt removal

  • Driveways and approaches, broken out and hauled off before the new pour.
  • Patios, sidewalks and steps.
  • Slabs and footings from old garages, sheds, barns and mobile home pads.
  • Asphalt driveways and parking areas.

We break the concrete up with the excavator, load it out and leave the subgrade ready for the concrete crew, or graded and ready for topsoil if nothing is going back.

Residential demolition

  • Garages, sheds and outbuildings.
  • Houses and mobile homes, once the utilities are disconnected and the permit is in hand.
  • In-ground pools, broken out, filled and compacted.
  • Old foundations and basements, removed or filled.

What we need to quote it

Send us photos and a rough size: how many square feet of concrete and how thick if you know, or the size of the building. Tell us about the access, whether the debris has to go or can be buried on site (often it can’t), and what the ground will be used for afterward.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to tear down a garage or house?
Usually, for a whole building. Inside Rapid City, demolishing a structure generally needs a permit from the city, and utilities have to be disconnected first. Removing a driveway or patio usually doesn't, but a new driveway approach onto a city street often does. Check with the building department, and we'll tell you what we've run into on similar jobs.
What happens to the concrete you remove?
We break it, load it and haul it off. Clean concrete without much dirt or trash mixed in can often go to a recycler instead of the landfill, so we keep it separate where we can.
Can you take out an old in-ground pool?
Yes. We break out the shell or the bottom so water can drain through, fill it in, compact it in layers and grade the yard. If you plan to build over that spot later, tell us first, because building ground needs more compaction than lawn.
Will the machine wreck my yard?
We pick the smallest machine that will do the job, plan the route in and out with you, and fix the ruts we make. Lawn and sprinkler lines along the route are the usual casualties, so mark sprinkler heads before we show up.
