Culvert Installation
About Culvert Installation
Black River Contracting provides culvert installation services for roads, driveways, drainage ditches, and infrastructure projects. Our work focuses on proper alignment, bedding, and compaction to ensure long-term performance and reliable drainage.
We install new culverts and replace failed or undersized crossings to restore flow and prevent erosion, washouts, and roadway damage.
That includes driveway culverts for homes and acreages around Rapid City and the Black Hills, field approaches and ranch road crossings, and culverts on county roads and commercial sites across Western South Dakota. For crossings where the machine can’t get close, our long-reach excavator reaches the inlet or outlet from across the ditch.

Installation Approach
Culvert installation is completed according to site conditions, flow requirements, and project specifications. Black River Contracting places emphasis on correct grade, alignment, and backfill to ensure the culvert functions as intended and holds up over time.
When Culvert Installation Is Required
Culvert installation is used where drainage must pass beneath roads, driveways, or access crossings, or where existing culverts have failed or no longer meet flow requirements.

Common questions
- Do you install driveway culverts?
- Yes. Driveway and field approach culverts are some of the most common jobs we do: new approaches, and replacing pipes that have rusted out, collapsed or plugged. We set the pipe to the ditch grade so water runs through it instead of over the driveway.
- Who decides what size a driveway culvert has to be?
- Where the driveway crosses a county or state road ditch, the road authority usually sets the minimum size and length through an approach permit, from the county highway department or, on state highways, the South Dakota Department of Transportation. Check with them before work starts; we'll install what the permit calls for.
- Why do culverts fail?
- Usually because the pipe is too small for the flow, it was set without good bedding and compaction, the inlet keeps plugging with debris, or a metal pipe has rusted through. Replacing it with the right size, bedded and backfilled properly, fixes the cause instead of just the hole.
- Where do you install culverts?
- Across Western South Dakota, including Rapid City, the Black Hills and ranch country, and into Northeast Wyoming.
