Mass Grading

Large-scale earthmoving that sets final subgrade elevations for roads, structures, and utilities.

About Mass Grading

Black River Contracting performs mass grading for projects that require large-scale earthmoving and site shaping. This work establishes final subgrade elevations and prepares sites for roads, structures, utilities, and other improvements.

Mass grading is completed using the appropriate equipment and sequencing to move material efficiently while maintaining grade control and drainage.

Wondering how this differs from fine grading? See mass grading vs. finish grading.

What we handle

  • Large-scale earthmoving and cut and fill operations

  • Site shaping and rough grading

  • Subgrade preparation for roads and structures

  • Balance of on-site material when possible

  • Drainage and slope formation

  • Coordination with survey and grade control

Execution

Mass grading work is planned based on site conditions, haul distances, and project requirements. Black River Contracting focuses on efficient material movement, accurate grades, and stable subgrades to support the next phase of construction.

When Mass Grading Is Required

Mass grading is used to establish overall site elevations and drainage prior to utility installation, paving, or structural work.

Why Black River?

  • Veteran-owned & operated (SDVOSB)
  • Modern, well-maintained equipment
  • Direct communication, no runaround
  • Clean sites, on-time delivery

Common questions

What is mass grading?
Mass grading is the large-scale earthmoving at the start of a project: cutting high ground and filling low ground to bring a whole site to its planned elevations and drainage before utilities, paving or buildings go in. It's usually measured in thousands of cubic yards and moved with scrapers, dozers and excavators.
What's the difference between mass grading and finish grading?
Mass grading moves the bulk of the dirt and sets rough elevations across the site. Finish grading comes later and trims the surface to final grade, within tight tolerances, for paving, slabs or landscaping.
Can the dirt stay on site?
When the cuts and fills balance, yes, and that's the cheapest way to grade a site. We plan the cut and fill to use the material on site where we can, so you're not paying to haul dirt off and bring more in.
