Septic System Installation in Western South Dakota

If your property is outside city sewer, the septic system is what makes the house livable. Black River Contracting installs new septic systems and replaces failed drain fields across Western South Dakota, and we’re a South Dakota certified on-site wastewater installer.

What we install

  • New septic systems for new homes, shops and cabins: the tank, the lines and the drain field.
  • Drain field replacement when the old field has failed but the tank is still sound.
  • Tank replacement for old steel tanks, cracked concrete tanks or tanks too small for the house.
  • Repairs: broken lines between the house and tank, crushed pipe, and settled or damaged fields.

How a septic job goes

  1. Site and soil. The system has to suit the soil and the slope. We look at where the house, well, property lines and driveway are, since septic tanks and fields have to keep their distance from all of them.
  2. Permit. Most counties want a permit and a soil or percolation test before work starts. We’ll tell you who to call and what they’re likely to ask for.
  3. Locates. We call in locates through SD811 before we dig.
  4. Install. We set the tank, run the lines and build the field to the approved design, then leave it open for inspection where the county requires one.
  5. Backfill and restore. We backfill, crown the field so water runs off it, and leave the ground ready to seed.

Around the Black Hills

Ground here changes fast. You can find clay in one spot, then shallow rock, then gravelly soil that drains too quickly. That’s why the soil test comes before the design, and why two neighbors can end up with different systems.

We work out of Summerset and install systems around Rapid City, Box Elder, Piedmont, Black Hawk, Sturgis, Spearfish, Hermosa, Custer and Hot Springs. If you’re on city water and sewer, see water, sewer and septic in Rapid City for service lines and connections.

Common questions

Do septic installers need to be certified in South Dakota?
Yes. South Dakota requires on-site wastewater systems to be installed by an installer certified through the state Plumbing Commission, and the system has to meet the state's design rules. Black River Contracting is a certified installer.
Do I need a permit for a new septic system?
Usually. Many counties in Western South Dakota require a permit and a soil or percolation test before a new system or a replacement drain field goes in, and the rules differ from county to county. Call your county planning or zoning office first; we'll work with whatever they require.
How do I know my drain field is failing?
Common signs are soggy ground or bright green grass over the drain field, sewage odor in the yard, slow drains or backups in the house, and a tank that needs pumping far more often than it used to. Have the tank pumped and inspected first. If the tank is sound and the field still won't take water, the field usually needs replacing.
Can you replace just the drain field and keep the tank?
Often, yes, if the tank is in good shape and sized for the house. We'll look at the tank, the baffles and the lines before we recommend replacing anything.
When can you install a septic system?
Most of the year. Frozen ground and wet spring soil slow the work down and can limit when soil testing is done, so if you're building, plan the septic with the rest of the site work rather than leaving it for last.
