Retaining Walls in Rapid City, SD

Hillside lots are common around Rapid City, and a retaining wall is often what makes a sloped yard usable: room for a driveway, a flat patch of lawn, or a cut that won’t slide onto the house. Black River Contracting builds block and boulder retaining walls, and we build them for the part you don’t see.

What we build

  • Block walls using segmental retaining wall block, with geogrid on taller walls when the design calls for it.
  • Boulder walls that suit Black Hills lots and hold up hillside cuts.
  • Replacements for leaning, bulging or collapsed walls.

How a wall goes in

  1. Dig and base. We dig a trench below the first course and build a compacted gravel base, because a wall is only as straight as what it sits on.
  2. Drainage. Drain pipe at the bottom behind the wall, outletted so water can get out, with clean rock behind the wall to carry water down to the pipe.
  3. Build and backfill. We set the wall and backfill it in compacted lifts as it goes up, laying in geogrid where the design calls for it.
  4. Finish grade. Topsoil and grading on top so surface water runs away from the wall instead of soaking in behind it.

We call in locates through SD811 before we dig. If your wall needs an engineered design, we build to the engineer’s drawings.

Common questions

Why do retaining walls fail?
Mostly water. When water can't drain out from behind a wall, it adds pressure the wall wasn't built for, and in winter it freezes and pushes. A poor base and no geogrid on taller walls are the other common causes. Most leaning walls we see were built without enough rock or a drain behind them.
Do I need a permit or an engineer for a retaining wall?
It depends on the height and what the wall holds up. Under the building codes most cities here use, a wall taller than about 4 feet from the bottom of the footing, or one holding up a driveway, building or steep slope, usually needs a permit and an engineered design. Check with your building department before we start.
Block or boulder: which should I pick?
Block walls give a clean, even face and suit tighter spaces and taller engineered walls. Boulder walls look natural in the Black Hills, cost less to build if the rock is close by, and suit hillside lots and landscaping. We'll tell you which suits your slope.
Can you remove and rebuild a failing wall?
Yes. We take the old wall down, dig out the base and backfill, and rebuild it with drainage. Rebuilding the same wall the same way usually gets you the same failure.
