Long Reach & Ditch Work in the Belle Fourche Valley

The Belle Fourche Valley is irrigated country. The Belle Fourche Reservoir behind Orman Dam feeds the Belle Fourche Irrigation District’s North and South canals, and hundreds of miles of laterals and drains carry that water to fields around Newell, Vale and Nisland. North of the valley, the land opens into range where cattle drink from stock dams and dugouts.

Ditches silt in, laterals grow over, culverts plug and dams wear down. Black River Contracting brings its Cat 324E with a 60-foot long-reach front to Newell, Nisland, Vale and the rest of the valley, and does that dirt work across Butte County and northern Lawrence County.

How a job goes

Tell us what needs doing and send photos if you have them. We come out, walk it with you, and give you a number. Ditch work is best lined up for when the water is off, so call early. We call in utility locates before we dig.

Common questions

Will you bring the long-reach excavator out to Newell or Nisland?
Yes. The long-reach excavator works from the bank or the dam crest, so it can clean out stock ponds, dugouts and ditches without driving onto soft ground. Lining up several jobs on one trip, yours or your neighbors', keeps the travel cost down.
Can you clean out irrigation ditches and laterals?
Yes. Our long-reach excavator works from the bank, so it can dig a ditch back to grade without driving down into it or tearing up the banks. Canals and laterals run by the Belle Fourche Irrigation District belong to the district, so work on those has to be arranged with them; ditches on your own ground are yours to call.
When is the best time for ditch work?
Outside the irrigation season, when the ditches are dry. Fall and early spring are the usual windows, so call before the water comes on.
Do you build stock dams and dugouts out here too?
Yes. North of the valley the country turns to open range, and we build and clean out stock dams and dugouts there. In South Dakota a small dam on a dry draw often needs only a Location Notice with DANR's Water Rights Program; check with them before we dig.
Can you work along the Belle Fourche River?
From the bank, yes. Work in the river or on its banks can need a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit, so check before the work starts.
